MELBOURNE - An inmate was found hanged in his cell at the Brevard County Detention Center, the fifth apparent suicide at the jail since December.
Cellmates found William Gamez, 31, hanging from a window grate by a bed sheet, sheriff's spokeswoman Yvonne Martinez said.
Jail medics attempted to revive Gamez, officials said.
Gamez had not been on suicide watch and was housed in the general population.
He had been at the Brevard County Detention Center since Sept. 14, 2002, charged with two counts of sexual battery on a child under 12. He faced life in prison if convicted.
Authorities are investigating the five suicides at the detention center since late December.
