Hot Ticket: He's sliding by for all that jazz

By Times Staff Writer
Published March 25, 2004

After a half-century in jazz, trombonist Slide Hampton is an international legend and a familiar face here because of his appearances at the Clearwater Jazz Holiday.

Happily for us, he also has family here - family with their own jazz club. Marcus and Rose Hampton host cousin Slide on Saturday for a special show at the Hampton House of Jazz in St. Petersburg, starting at 8:30 p.m., but come early for Rose's home cooking. For reservations, call the Hampton House of Jazz, 1113 Central Ave., St. Petersburg. $13. (727) 821-1800.

ALSO: On Friday at the Sarasota Jazz Festival, catch Slide Hampton with the Dizzy Gillespie Alumni All Stars (also featuring Frank Wess and Claudio Roditi), along with jazz violinist Johnny Frigo and pianist Joe Vito. Show time is 7:30 p.m. at Van Wezel Hall, Sarasota. $25-$35. Call toll free 1-800-826-9303 or (941) 953-3368.
