TREASURE ISLAND - Stephanie Lavino, a former city commissioner, has died at 50.
Mrs. Lavino, who left the commission last year because of poor health, died Friday (March 26, 2004) at Palms of Pasadena Hospital, South Pasadena.
A Lupus patient since 1980, she died of a heart attack, her husband said Monday.
She was appointed to the commission in 1994 while serving on the city Board of Adjustment.
The next year she was elected to the District 1 seat, representing the Isle of Capri neighborhood and part of Sunshine Beach.
In 1997, she lost a re-election bid to George Makrauer but won the seat back from him in 1999. No candidate filed to oppose her in 2001.
Mrs. Lavino, a native of England who came here in 1978, worked for 15 years as a paralegal. She operated a lamp shade business for a decade. She was a member of the St. Petersburg Garden Club and was a co-founder of the Treasure Island Historical Society.
Survivors include her husband, Ronald J.; her mother, Jean Dray; four sisters, Heather Dray, Yvonne Dray, Rachel Dray and Pat Wolstenholme; and two brothers, David Dray and Tim Dray, all of England.
A memorial service will be at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Brett Funeral Home, 4810 Central Ave.
