McGrady out for rest of season

ORLANDO - NBA scoring leader Tracy McGrady will miss the rest of the season after the Magic put him on the injured list Wednesday because of left knee tendinitis.

McGrady, averaging 28 points, skipped the past two games and now will miss the final seven. At 19-56, Orlando has the league's worst record.

"It just isn't getting any better," McGrady said. "The organization doesn't want to me to rush it, and I don't want to rush it. I just don't want to put pressure on myself to try and come back too soon. We're just being cautious."

McGrady has all but clinched his second straight scoring title. Sacramento's Peja Stojakovic ranks second with 24.7 points.

NUGGETS: The league fined guard Jon Barry $7,500 for yelling at officials at the end of Denver's 85-83 loss to the Jazz Saturday.

TIMBERWOLVES: Point guard Troy Hudson was placed on the injured list with a sprained left ankle and Darrick Martin was signed to replace him.

MURPHY IN TEARS: Blotting tears with a white hand towel after appearing in court in Houston, former Rockets star Calvin Murphy insisted he did not molest five of his daughters.

"I am not guilty of these charges," Murphy said after his initial court appearance on the charges. "I can't emphasize that enough."

Murphy, 55, was granted a leave of absence from his Rockets TV job while he fights three charges of indecency with a child and three charges of aggravated sexual assault of a child. Prosecutor Lance Long said at least one of the five daughters accusing Murphy was as young as 6 when she contends Murphy took her to a hotel room and assaulted her.

Murphy has 14 children - 10 girls and four boys - with nine women, Long said.

"My heart aches - of course for me because I am in the spotlight - but it really aches for my daughters, because there are reasons behind this kind of thing that will be brought out later," Murphy said.

Murphy's next court date is April 27.

WILLIAMS TRIAL: The defense in Jayson Williams' manslaughter trial rested after the former NBA star said he would not take the stand. "I am innocent, I put my trust in God and I have great confidence in this jury," Williams told Superior Court Judge Edward M. Coleman in Somerville, N.J. He said he made the decision after discussions with his wife and defense team. The trial resumes today with prosecution rebuttal witnesses.
