Warhawks nip Eagles behind future Gator

EAST LAKE - On a day when Cody Reed didn't have his best stuff, it was still good enough.

Reed, a Florida signee, struck out 12 to lead Seminole past East Lake 3-2 on Wednesday.

It was the second time Reed has shut down the Eagles (8-6) in the past 10 days. He struck out 15 in a 7-1 win last week. He was more commanding that day. Reed, who battled out of numerous jams Wednesday, said he was surprised about striking out 12.

"I didn't have any command of my fastball," he said. "I was struggling to find my command, but fortunately, the defense came through for me."

In five of the seven innings, East Lake had runners in scoring position, and Reed never retired the side in order. But he still went the whole way for his fifth win.

East Lake put a runner on third with one out in the first, but Reed retired the side without any damage. The Warhawks (11-2) opened the scoring in the second when Phil Weylie slammed a double off the leftfield wall. He moved to third on Kyle Albright's bunt single and scored one pitch later on a double play.

The Eagles tied it in their half of the second. Mike Papa reached on a fielder's choice and moved over on Zack Stein's single to center. He later scored on Donnie Hathaway's long fly to right.

East Lake's Dane Lynch matched Reed until the fifth, when Seminole scored twice. Ryan Reilly led off with a walk and moved to second on a sacrifice. Skylar Delgado and Ricky Nolan followed with long doubles to make it 3-1.

But in the bottom of the fifth, Drew Turnier reached second on a throwing error and moved to third on a bunt single by Brett Foley. Dan Boucher followed with an opposite field single to right, but Reed got out of the jam with two strikeouts.

East Lake wasted another opportunity in the sixth when Bill Manion singled with one out and stole second. But Reed struck out the next two.
