Girls swim squad has record-setting day in 2 events

The St.Pete Aquatics 13-14 medley relay team set state and Junior Olympic records in the 200 and 400 meters. Stase Michota, Tracy Rorer, Kelsey Krauss and Megan Romano finished the 200 in 1:51:10, breaking the 1997 mark. They surpassed the 400 record established in '96 with a 4:00:59 performance.

The SPA members making the Junior Olympic and/or Senior Championship squads are: Brenno Varando, Adam Moody, Mitchell Snyder, Brent Sunnucks, Andy Stoddard, Josh Gordon, Kevin Nardozzi, John-Paul Newfield, Russell Snyder, Whitney Kerns, Daniela Brands, Victoria King, Lauren Sanchez, Charlotte Petersen, Colleen Bauza, Jessie Bardin, Jaime Milo, Kate Cillian, Sally Decker, Kelly McClenathan, Laura Linton, Cameron Chambers, Katie Brown, Lindsay Daniel, Casey McKeon, Kaitlin Frehling, Sidney Newfield, Jennifer Crankshaw, Allie Evans, Colleen Quinn, Michota, Rorer, Krauss and Romano.

TURNERS: The Tampa Bay gymnastics program was in the Level 9 and 10 state meet in Coral Springs.

The Level 9 team placed third with champions Brianna Melander, Sarah Brownlee and Lindsay Weber. Melander finished first on the bars, second all-around, fourth on balance beam and fifth on vault. Brownlee won the bars and all-around competition, was second on beam, sixth in the floor exercise and seventh on vault. Weber was tops in the balance beam, second on floor and third all-around.

The squad's other finishers were Ashley Sullivan (second, beam); Alyssa Adrian (fifth, bars); Jordann Windschauer (second, beam); Alyssa Collins (second, all-around); Brittany Hunt (second, floor); and BriAnne McKean (fifth, floor).

For Level 10, Breanne Guy captured second on the bars, sixth on balance beam and all-around and eighth on floor. Jenny Citrin was fifth on the vault and eighth on floor. Lauren Bernloehr claimed sixth on the vault and ninth on beam.

The Turners also competed in the Level 7 and 8 state meet in Orlando.

The Level 8 team finished fourth and had all of its competitors qualify for the April 16-18 regionals at Tampa Convention Center. Jamie Applefield and Nicole Abdo were crowned state champions after winning performances - Applefield in the vault, floor and all-around; Abdo on bars. Applefield also is part of State Team Florida for the Regional Championships. Other Tampa finishers in Orlando were Elle Mixa, Morgan Gunning, Deni Morgan and Mindy Richards.

The Level 7 squad took fourth on championship showings from Mariah Broughton (bars/all-around), Ashtyn Morgan (balance beam/all-around) and Stephanie McKee (floor). Also in the top 10 were Alexia Perry, Sarah Wolford, Lindsey Brown, Aramis Andreatas and Katie Harbin.

GEMINI: The Oldsmar gymnastics school's Level 7 optional girls team participated in state competition at Rollins College in Winter Park. The squad finished in sixth place. It was led by champions Lauryn Kannard and Sarah Zoldos. Kannard won the all-around, bars and floor. Zoldos captured all-around, bars, beam and floor titles. The club's other finishers were Rachel Coderre (third, bars); Christina Gunther (fifth, beam/all-around); and Ariana Segal (fourth, bars).

LAFLEURS: The Largo gymnastics organization's Level 9 and 10 teams battled in the Florida State Championships in Coral Springs.

In Level 9, Danielle Carey was first on the floor, second on beam, third on vault, eighth on bars and second all-around. Jenna Paul came in second on vault, sixth on beam, seventh on floor and bars and sixth all-around. Natalie Garcia finished first on vault, third on floor and beam and fourth all-around. Tiffany Brodbeck was fourth on vault and floor and sixth all-around. Jacqueline Higueros took second on vault, fourth on beam, seventh on bars and sixth all-around. Jennifer Voynovich claimed second on bars and eighth on floor. Ashley Stronh was fourth on vault, seventh on floor and eighth on beam.

In Level 10, Alyssa Wright (junior division) was fifth on floor, sixth on beam and vault and ninth all-around. Leslie Valenty (senior class) placed third on floor, fifth on vault, seventh on beam and seventh all-around.

APOLLO: The gymnastics school's Class 7 team participated in the USAG State Championships in Coral Springs. Matthew Endo, 10, finished fourth all-around, including first on the floor, second on the pommel horse, third on parallel bars, fourth on rings and seventh on vault.
