BOSTON - Maybe Patrice Bergeron and Andrew Raycroft are just too young to realize that the Bruins aren't supposed to do this to the Canadiens.
The two rookies combined to help Boston beat Montreal 2-1 on Friday, giving the Bruins a 2-0 lead in the East quarterfinal series.
Bergeron, 18, scored 1:26 into overtime and has been a part of three of the Bruins' five goals in the series.
"In our dressing room, I don't know if anyone looks at him as a rookie. Both him and Andrew, they have a certain maturity level," coach Mike Sullivan said. "(Bergeron) has done nothing but impress us all year long. From Day 1, he just raised eyebrows. He really understands the game for a guy his age."
The teams have a long-running animosity that, in its time, was at least the equal of the Red Sox-Yankees rivalry that bedevils Boston. And this one is almost as one-sided: Montreal has won 23 Stanley Cups to five for Boston. Of the 29 series between them, Montreal has won 22, including a first-round ouster two years ago after the Bruins finished with the East's best record.
Raycroft, 23, stopped 25 shots.
AVALANCHE 5, STARS 2: Peter Forsberg, Alex Tanguay and Milan Hejduk combined for two goals and four assists for host Colorado, which took a 2-0 lead in the West quarterfinal series. Dallas was 1-for-7 on the power play after going scoreless in five chances in Game 1. After falling behind 2-0 in the first nine minutes on Wednesday, Dallas took its first lead in the series on Mike Modano's power-play goal 81/2 minutes in. But Joe Sakic tied it on a power play just 1:03 later, sneaking in for a one-timer on Forsberg's pass from behind the goal. Colorado forward Paul Kariya will travel to Dallas, but will keep receiving treatment for his sprained ankle. He could play Game 3 on Monday.
FLYERS: Forward Claude Lapointe was suspended after he was placed into the second stage of the league's substance abuse and behavioral health program. Under the terms of the program, Lapointe will be suspended without pay until cleared by doctors to return. "All we can do is hope that Claude gets the help he needs and support him and his family in any way it is possible to do that," general manager Bob Clarke said. The Flyers lead their East quarterfinal series with New Jersey 1-0.
PREDATORS: Defenseman Marek Zidlicky won't play against Detroit in Game 2 today because of an upper body injury. Zidlicky was checked into the boards by Kirk Maltby in Game 1. General manager David Poile said Zidlicky could play in Game 3 Sunday in Nashville. "We think he is going to play in this series," he said. "The opposition has been known to go after a guy any way to get an advantage, and we don't want to put Marek at risk."
SHARKS: Center Alyn McCauley injured his shoulder in San Jose's Game 1 1-0 overtime win over St. Louis when he tripped over a stick and slid hard into the boards. McCauley returned for two shifts before leaving. "I'll try and (ignore) any soreness, and hopefully get through," McCauley said. If McCauley can't play today, Mark Smith could make his debut. McCauley had 20 goals this year.
