Peter Akintola Jr. died Friday after collapsing during a pickup basketball game, according to Eckerd College officials. The forward was in the school's gym around 4 p.m., playing with several teammates, said Lisa Mets, executive assistant at Eckerd. Paramedics used an automatic defibrillator on Akintola before taking him to Bayfront Medical Center, Mets said.
He died of a massive heart attack, Mets said. Akintola, from Boston, Mass., graduated from Armwood High in 2001. He was a junior majoring in management. His age was not available Friday. Friends gathered for a service in the college chapel at 9 p.m. Friday, Mets said.
