Chemical extinguishers put out tank fire

Tampa Fire Rescue used chemical extinguishers to douse a fire that flared up in an asphalt processing tank near Ybor City Saturday afternoon.

Fire rescue spokesman Bill Wade said crews were called about 1 p.m. to 2701 E 2nd Ave, where flames were roiling above a 10-foot-tall asphalt tank, sending a column of black smoke into the air. The fire crews used dry chemical extinguishers to reduce the flames, and had the fire under control in less than 30 minutes. Wade said the motor of the asphalt tank had apparently burned out, causing materials inside to combust. No injuries or property damage was reported.
