TAMPA - A Tampa man was shot in the groin early Sunday morning by a robber as he tried to say good night to his date, authorities said.
A St. Joseph's Hospital spokeswoman reported Robert McDonald in good condition Sunday night.
About 2:30 a.m., three men approached McDonald, 36, and Jeanne Adams, 46, in the parking lot of Carrollwood Palms apartment, 4302 Gunn Highway, where Adams lives, Hillsborough County sheriff's deputies said. The couple had just returned from a date and were saying good night, deputies said, when the men opened the driver and passenger doors and told McDonald and Adams to get out, demanding that Adams give them her purse.
When the pair tried to fight off their attackers, deputies said one of the robbers shot McDonald once in the groin before running off with Adams' purse and a cell phone. A fire rescue team transported McDonald to St. Joseph's with nonlife-threatening injuries.
Deputies didn't release a good description of the robbers, only describing them as all tall, thin and in their late teens to early 20s. They drove away in a small, gold sedan or hatchback that deputies said was in "poor condition."
