Let the games live

www.The-UnderDogs.org/

I'm not a game-playing type, as the fake 3-D aspect of anything that's truly two dimensional makes me ill. And, sadly, nobody really plays Space Invaders or Pong anymore. But this site appears to be a primo place for older PC games. Its mission, according to the site, is to preserve "good games that deserve a second chance after dismal sales or critical reviews that we feel are unwarranted." Fire up your virus scanner, though. As with any file you download from the Internet, you should scan it before running the thing.

Pixel packing punch

www.Gimp.org/

When Photoshop first came out, I smashed several piggy banks and ponied up for the 2.0 version. While my needs were simple and mostly involved resizing and cropping images, there wasn't really anything like it. Fast forward to today. If you're in the same boat, or are thinking about updating old image manipulation software, do yourself a favor and check out the GNU Image Manipulation Program. This cross-platform beauty is free and equally at home on Mac OS X, Windows and various other operating systems.

Free lunch

Free-Culture.org/freecontent/

Oh, you have to love the sweet irony of books denouncing big media that are pushed out by various arms of megapublishing corporations. But here's an interesting experiment by Penguin Press and professor Lawrence Lessig. They've released a full length PDF version of Lessig's Free Culture book that's a download away.

My fellow Americans

www.ammi.org/livingroomcandidate/

A random, nonscientific poll of young co-workers seems to show that they think Jack Kennedy ushered in the era of being a TV president through charisma and dashing looks. But what of the others and those who came before him? While searching around for political video clips, I stumbled on this gem of a site. Bring your Real and Windows Media players and roll around from 1952 through 2000. It's great stuff for an election year.

Swing king

www.Tarzan.org/

By my own odd sense of reckoning, it must be about time for another Tarzan movie or TV remake. If the dually lame Spider-Man and Incredible Hulk movies can get financing, then why not the mighty ape man? Agree or not, you can bide your time between now and then with this well done offering from the official source.
