Two men injured when fishing boat explodes

POMPANO BEACH - Two men suffered burn injuries when their fishing boat exploded at a dock here early Sunday.

Richard Bastiani, 47, and Harry Unger, 44, both of Fort Lauderdale, were treated at hospitals and released, officials said.

The 6 a.m. explosion occurred when the men started the boat's engine to leave the dock, Pompano Beach Fire-Rescue spokeswoman Sandra King said.

King said the men had stopped at a gas station earlier to fill up the boat's tank. One of them apparently pumped the gas through a fishing rod holder, sending the fuel through other parts of the boat instead of into the tank.
