No recourse in court for fast-food fatties

TALLAHASSEE - People who think restaurant food made them fat would not be able to get damages in court under a bill approved by the Senate Agriculture Committee Tuesday.

"If you choose to eat a cheeseburger and your rear end gets broader, you can't sue," said Sen. Rod Smith, D-Alachua, summing up the bill (CS SB 1394) he's sponsoring.

Smith said people have tried to file such suits - they've been dismissed - but will likely keep trying.

The bill can now go to the full Senate for a vote. The House has passed a similar measure.
