TAMPA - Two pedestrians were killed early Thursday as they tried to cross Busch Boulevard, Tampa police said.

Joseph Sheppard, 41, and Phyllis Boyd, 39, both of Tampa, were crossing the road near N Brooks Street, about six blocks east of Nebraska Avenue, when the accident happened just after 1:30 a.m.

Investigators said it appeared the two pedestrians stepped in front of an eastbound 1998 Ford F-150 pickup driven by Ronnie Bare, 48, of Zephyrhills. Sheppard and Boyd were killed on impact, according to reports. The reports said "preliminary investigation reveals that alcohol may be involved on the part of the pedestrians."

Bare was tested at the scene and did not appear to be impaired, the reports said. An investigation is continuing.
