Tampa clinic will tend to globe-trotting cat

TAMPA - The travels of a cat that apparently spent more than 30 days trapped in a metal container shipped from China aren't over.

The cat is set to be moved today from the Hillsborough County animal shelter to a private clinic on Busch Boulevard.

"We'll perform blood work as well as X-rays and ultrasound to find out if in addition to the emaciation she has an infectious disease or any major disease of her organs," said Neil Shaw, medical director of Florida Veterinary Specialists.

Shaw said he has offered to take care of the cat at no charge to the county, which doesn't have the advanced medical resources of a specialty clinic.

Norman Goldberg, owner of Quality Discount Cages, said he discovered the cat April 9 when he opened a shipping container filled with 400 parrot cages he had ordered from a factory in China. He called Hillsborough County Animal Services to get the cat.

So far, the shelter has received about four applications to adopt the feline and about a dozen e-mail inquiries, according to manager Janice Maharaj.
