Up next: White Sox

By MARC TOPKIN
Published April 16, 2004

SCOUTING REPORT: Most of the White Sox news this winter was about whom they lost, such as Carl Everett, Bartolo Colon and Tom Gordon, and whom they might trade, with Magglio Ordonez, Frank Thomas and Paul Konerko mentioned.

But the most noticeable difference so far is whom they brought in: new manager Ozzie Guillen.

Under Guillen, the Sox are having fun and winning - 6-3 overall; two straight in their final at-bat. The starting rotation remains solid, led by Mark Buehrle and Esteban Loaiza, and the offense so far has been one of the most productive, anchored by heavy hitters such as Thomas, Ordonez, Konerko and Carlos Lee. Catcher Miguel Olivo is a future star. Damaso Marte is one of the toughest left-handed relievers around, but the bullpen overall can be vulnerable.

CONNECTIONS: Guillen finished his career as a Rays backup in 2000. ... White Sox reserve Ross Gload starred at USF. ... Rays catcher Brook Fordyce played for the Sox in 1999-2000. ... Rays hitting coach Lee Elia made his major-league debut as a Sox shortstop in 1966. ... Pitching coach Chuck Hernandez was a Sox minor-leaguer.

SEASON SERIES: The Sox lead 29-22 overall, 14-12 at Tropicana Field.
