DAYTONA BEACH - Jamie McMurray and Larry Foyt were docked 25 points each Tuesday by NASCAR for bringing cars to Bristol Motor Speedway that did not meet specifications.
The cars were confiscated March 26 during a pre-event inspection and have been held by NASCAR in Concord, N.C.
McMurray's Chip Ganassi Racing Dodge was confiscated because its rear window opening exceeded the prescribed diagonal specification. Foyt's Dodge was taken by NASCAR when its roof did not fit the templates.
With the loss of points, McMurray, last year's top Cup rookie, drops from 13th to 14th in the standings. Ganassi, who also lost car-owner points, fell to 14th in that category. Larry Foyt, who has run a partial schedule, dropped from 40th to 44th with 194 points.
BOXING: Frazier charges droppedProsecutors dropped assault charges against former heavyweight champ Joe Frazier after the alleged victim refused to testify in Philadelphia. Frazier was arrested in February and charged with assaulting the mother of his 12-year-old son. Prosecutors said there was no way to move forward without the woman's testimony.
OLYMPIAN ACQUITTED: Tim Austin was acquitted of charges he raped a 16-year-old girl in Cincinnati. The 1992 Olympic bronze medalist won the IBF bantamweight title in 1997.
COLLEGES: Call for recruiting reformRECRUITING: Denouncing a "culture of entitlement" in which recruits are treated as celebrities and in some cases enticed with sex and alcohol, the NCAA will give immediate attention to reform. Possible changes include prohibitions on two-night stays and recruits visiting bars, strip clubs and parties.
USF AD: Jack Jones, the women's basketball coach and former athletic director at the University of the Ozarks, applied for the athletic director position.
BASEBALL: USF scored six runs in the seventh to beat UCF 6-3 in Orlando. ... Embry Riddle beat host Tampa 12-2. ... Palm Beach Atlantic beat host Saint Leo 11-3.
GOLF: USF moved into fifth place at 597 at the Conference USA championship at Lake Jovita in Dade City. Texas Christian was the leader at 572, 15 shots ahead of Charlotte. TCU's Adam Meyer shot 69 for 137 to lead by seven shots. The final round is today. ... USF's women shot 321 to fall out of first place into a tie for third at the Conference USA championship at Fort Worth, Texas. Tulane took the lead at 629, with TCU at 633 and USF at 639.
SOFTBALL: Host Eckerd beat Warner Southern 5-4 and 2-1 (8 innings), and Amy Kilbert broke Eckerd's career record for doubles with 39. ... Florida beat Bethune-Cookman 6-0 in the Gators' final home game of the season.
OLYMPICS: Stadium not completeThe chief IOC overseer of the Athens Games believes the roof on the main Olympic stadium will be finished before a June deadline. "I'm really confident," Denis Oswald said. The International Olympic Committee has told organizers that work on the roof must wrap up by the end of June. The comments came as part of an inspection to see if each of the venues will be ready in time for the Games in August, and there are major concerns that some will not be done.
ET CETERACYCLING: Gord Fraser, a Canadian rider, captured the first stage of the Tour de Georgia in Macon, edging Lance Armstrong in 3:18:59 on the 82.1-mile course.
TENNIS: Alex Corretja beat two-time defending champion Juan Carlos Ferrero 6-2, 6-3 in the first round of the Monte Carlo Masters in Monaco. It was the second-seeded Ferrero's second straight loss on clay.
TRACK: Four U.S. athletes received public warnings for using the stimulant modafinil, but they can compete at the Athens Olympics. Sprinter Chryste Gaines and hurdlers Sandra Glover, Eric Thomas and Chris Phillips have tested positive. Thomas was stripped of his national championship in the 400-meter hurdles.
