CHICAGO - Alex Rodriguez homered and Jorge Posada hit a tiebreaking shot in the seventh inning, leading the Yankees past the White Sox 3-1 Wednesday night.
Javier Vazquez (2-1) allowed five hits in eight innings - retiring his final 10 batters. After losing three of four at Fenway Park, New York has won the first two in Chicago.
Rodriguez's second homer with the Yankees tied it at 1 in the sixth. Posada's seventh homer of the season, a two-run shot, made it 3-1. Mariano Rivera worked a hitless ninth for his fifth save in five chances.
Gary Sheffield singled in the seventh off Jon Garland (1-1) before Posada drove a pitch high and far over the fence in right-center, increasing his team-leading RBI total to 18. It was his second homer in two nights.
Garland allowed just two hits in the first five innings - a bunt single to leadoff hitter Bubba Crosby and another single to Sheffield when Carlos Lee trapped his fly ball in left.
Garland struck out the first two batters in the sixth and had Rodriguez 0-and-2 before the AL MVP drove the next pitch over the fence in right.
RED SOX 4, BLUE JAYS 2: Doug Mirabelli homered twice, Tim Wakefield had another solid outing visiting Boston sent Toronto to its fifth straight loss.
At 3-11, the Blue Jays are off to the worst start in club history. Toronto is also the first team to start 0-8 at home since the 1992 Tigers.
Mirabelli, who hit six homers last season, had a shot off Ted Lilly (0-2) in the third. His two-run shot in the fourth hit off the facing of the fourth deck in leftfield. It was his second career multihomer game.
Before the game, Mirabelli joked with manager Terry Francona about how he deserved to start over Jason Varitek because he homered off Lilly before.
Mirabelli, who went 3-for-4, was already in the starting lineup, but he's played in just three games this season, serving as Wakefield's personal catcher. Wakefield (2-0) became the latest pitcher to shut down the Blue Jays, allowing two runs on six hits, while striking out four and walking two in 62/3 innings.
Keith Foulke pitched a perfect ninth for his fifth save in five tries. Boston has won three straight and six of seven.
TIGERS 11, TWINS 8: Ivan Rodriguez had four hits and visiting Detroit roughed up Tampa native Brad Radke to end the Twins' six-game winning streak.
Craig Monroe had three hits and scored three, and Alex Sanchez returned to the lineup and drove in three. Detroit led 9-0 in the third.
Only once last season did the Tigers score more than 11. On their way to an AL-record 119 losses, they beat Kansas City 15-6 on Sept. 23.
ATHLETICS 7, MARINERS 4: Jermaine Dye hit a two-run double in the ninth for visiting Oakland. The rally spoiled a dramatic comeback by the Mariners, who had their four-game winning streak snapped. Pinch-hitter Dave Hansen hit a three-run home run in the seventh to tie it at 4.
Oakland pulled it out in the ninth, though. Eric Byrnes drew a leadoff walk off Seattle reliever Mike Myers (0-1) and Eric Chavez, who led off the fourth with a solo homer to make it 2-0, singled to right.
Mariners manager Bob Melvin turned to reliever Shigetoshi Hasegawa, and Dye hit the first pitch into the left-field corner to make it 6-4.
RANGERS 4, ANGELS 1: Michael Young hit a tiebreaking two-run triple and rookie Gerald Laird threw out three baserunners trying to steal second for visiting Texas.
R.A. Dickey (2-1) allowed a run and six hits over seven innings, struck out seven and walked one. He pitched with runners on base in each of the first five innings. He was bailed out twice on strikeout-caught stealing double plays as Laird threw out Jose Guillen with Jeff DaVanon at the plate in the second, then erased Bengie Molina on a failed hit-and-run with Adam Kennedy up in the fifth. Jeff Nelson pitched a hitless eighth and Francisco Cordero pitched the ninth for his fourth save.
ROYALS-INDIANS PPD.: The game was rained out and no makeup was announced.
