Teen's quiet nature belied a killer's rage

HARDAWAY - Willie Sentille Smith Jr. kept to himself most of the time, never got in trouble and was always talking about his girlfriend, Kimberly Walker.

But after fighting with the 18-year-old high school senior in her mobile home in this rural town near the Georgia border, Smith, 21, got out the .22-caliber rifle he bought to hunt rabbits and squirrels and shot Walker, her mother, a sister and a cousin to death Monday, officials said.

Victims besides Walker were her 14-year-old sister, Laterica Jackson; their mother, 35-year-old Deondra Scott; and the girls' cousin, 9-year-old Terrel Brown. All were shot at least once in the back of the head, and police found 14 spent bullet casings.

Smith's mother, Maxine Smith, didn't want to talk about the crime Wednesday. Neighbors either wouldn't talk or said they didn't know much about Smith, except that he was quiet.

Willie Smith's aunt, Barbara Barnes, said her nephew never did drugs or showed any signs of violence. She said he loved listening to music and his girlfriend.
