Election 2004
Kerry releases military records
By wire services
Published April 22, 2004
WASHINGTON - After days of being pressed by Republicans, Sen. John Kerry on Wednesday released his military records, which showed uniformly positive evaluations from his commanding officers in Vietnam. After balking on Monday on a promise to release his full record of Navy service, Kerry posted more than 140 pages of documents on his campaign Web site in a move that largely silenced critics on an aspect of his life that has been central to his presidential candidacy.
The records are replete with instances of bravery in the face of enemy fire and describe a young officer who is smart, articulate and decisive.
For example, George Elliot, his commanding officer in early 1969 wrote, "In a combat environment often requiring independent, decisive action, LTJG Kerry was unsurpassed." He added, "His bearing and appearance are above reproach."
Kerry became a lightning rod for a number of Vietnam veterans after he became a prominent critic of the war and said that American soldiers, including himself, had committed atrocities.
The military records offered no hint of atrocities, but repeatedly cited Kerry's initiative in battle and patrician manner.
As an ensign on board the USS Gridley in 1967, Kerry was described by his commanding officer as "intelligent, mature and rich in educational background and experience," as well as "polished, tactful and outgoing" and "a brilliant conversationalist."
Nader says he qualifies for federal funds
WASHINGTON - Independent presidential candidate Ralph Nader raised about $600,000 in the two months since he announced his candidacy, enough money to qualify for federal matching funds and well ahead of the fundraising pace he set four years ago, his campaign said Wednesday.
In papers filed with Federal Election Commission, Nader said roughly 60 percent of that amount had been donated over the Internet.
To receive matching funds, a candidate must raise at least $5,000 in 20 states in donations of $250 or less. Nader has collected more than $5,000 from 23 different states.
