TAMPA - The National Football Foundation and Hall of Fame on Wednesday honored Hillsborough County players who have excelled in the classroom and on the field.
Armwood lineman Jacob Griffin earned the National Football Foundation Scholarship at the 36th annual awards banquet. Griffin, of the 15-0 state championship team, is headed to USF.
The Foundation honored 18 scholar-athletes. Jesuit had A.J. Smith, Davey May and Dan Holder honored. King had Bjar Atkins and Kyle Salman, Jefferson Garrett Myers and Almondo Sapp and Chamberlain Sidney Bryant and Garrett Gibbons. The others were Durant's Fred Andrews, Middleton's William Bergen, Berkeley Prep's William Carson III, Tampa Bay Tech's Maurice Crum, Alonso's John Forbes, Hillsborough's Julian Jean-Pierre, Robinson's Travis Johnson and Plant City's Jay Smith.
Erika Van Trump of Riverview and Kamal Nesfield of Blake won NFL Players Association Scholarships of $2,500 each. Robert Hanna Jr. of Durant won the Sam Bailey Scholarship, Kent Wilson of Robinson the J. Crockett Farnell Contribution to Amateur Football Award and Tommy Warnock of Plant City the Tom McEwen Special Award.
