New law to aid neighborhood watchers

By Times Staff Writer
Published April 23, 2004

Pushed by Tampa police officials and community activists, Gov. Jeb Bush signed into law Thursday a bill that makes harassing a neighborhood watch group member a misdemeanor crime.

Tampa police Capt. Sophia Teague fought for the bill, dating back to 2000, when she "recognized a need to protect members from harassment while engaged in sanctioned watch activities," according to a Tampa police statement.
