Robinson holds on to beat King

TAMPA - Robinson scored five times in the first inning and then held on to garner a 7-5 victory against King.

Although pleased with the win, Robinson coach Sal Urso sees room for improvement.

"We have to learn to put a team away when we get a big lead like we did today," Urso said. "And we didn't do that.

"But we won, and that's the important thing."

Robinson (7-13) jumped out to a 2-0 lead when rightfielder Shane Scanlon hit a fastball down the leftfield line to score Chris Mills and Steven Evarts.

"That hit was huge for us." Scanlon said. "It gave us an early lead, but it also gave us confidence."

The Knights added two more when first baseman Mike Robinson also doubled, bringing home Scanlon and starting pitcher Greg Koons.

Mike Saine scored the final run of the inning on the front end of a delayed double steal.

King began to edge back into the game by scoring a run in the first and third innings, both driven in on singles by shortstop Jeff Bromley, who is hitting .407.

"We made too many mistakes, both physical and mental," Bromley said. "When we get guys on, we have to learn to get them home."

King (15-6) scored twice in the seventh, bringing the tying run to the plate.

Robinson will go into its district tournament as a No. 4 seed. King is a No. 2.

"In high school baseball, it's all about district and regional play," King coach Jim Macaluso said. "And I told our players once we begin to drive those runs home, we'll be okay."
