Singh wins at Houston

HUMBLE, Texas - Vijay Singh is usually unbeatable entering the final round of a tournament. He proved it again Monday.

Singh shared the lead with Palm Harbor's John Huston in the PGA's rain-delayed Houston Open going into the last round, but he pulled away with 4-under 68 for his sixth straight win when leading after three rounds.

Singh finished at 11-under 277 for a two-stroke victory over Scott Hoch (67). Huston (71) was another shot back for his best finish of the year, followed by Stephen Ames (69) and Dudley Hart (70).

PALMER TO PLAY: Arnold Palmer will play in the CVS Charity Classic from June 27-29 at Rhode Island Country Club in Woonsocket.

COLLEGES: LSU's Gunter to retire

LSU is expected to announce today that longtime women's basketball coach Sue Gunter is retiring and will be replaced by interim coach Pokey Chatman, the Associated Press reported. ... Miami freshman forward Karron Clarke decided to transfer. ... Syracuse sophomore point guard Billy Edelin has withdrawn from classes. ... Saint Joseph's assistant Matt Brady was named Marist coach.

BASEBALL: Tampa senior infielder Matt Armstrong was Sunshine State Conference player of the week. Tampa senior Eric Beattie was pitcher of the week.

SOFTBALL: Former coach Teresa Wilson sued Washington, saying she was wrongfully fired amid accusations William Scheyer, a team doctor, improperly handed out powerful pain medication to players. She also alleged sex discrimination in the way she and her program were treated by administrators. ... FSU senior pitcher/outfielder Jessica van der Linden was named ACC player of the week.

VOLLEYBALL: Former Houston assistant Nikki Shade, a teammate of USF coach Claire Lessinger at Florida, was named associate coach of the Bulls.

HORSE RACING: Jockeys want logos

Hall of Famer Jerry Bailey and other top jockeys appeared in federal court in Louisville, Ky., to ask a judge to block the state law that bans union and corporate logo patches in time for Saturday's Kentucky Derby. ... With 11 first-place finishes, nine seconds and 13 thirds, Tony Cataldi was trainer of the month at Tampa Bay Downs.

AMERICA'S CUP: Seattle billionaire Craig McCaw's team won a $1-million court judgment in Wellington, New Zealand, against Sean Reeves, an employee it accused of selling secrets to rivals.

FOOTBALL: The St. Petersburg Sharks (10-1) host the Duval Lions (8-3) at 7:05 p.m. Saturday at the 31st Street Sports Complex for the Southern States League division title. Largo's Darroyn Green and Northeast's Phil Webster each had two TDs as the Sharks beat the Tampa Barracudas 34-13 Saturday.

OLYMPICS: U.S. officials hope to use a clause in the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency's rules to bar athletes who acknowledge the use of steroids and other banned substances, including in grand jury testimony. USOC president Bill Martin and other officials want access to grand jury transcripts in the San Francisco Bay Area Laboratory Co-Operative case involving the alleged distribution of steroids to athletes. ... Australian swimmer Craig Stevens withdrew from the 400-meter freestyle, giving Ian Thorpe a chance to defend his title in Athens.

SOCCER: Diego Maradona was breathing on his own with an oxygen mask and in stable condition as he battles serious heart and lung problems in Buenos Aires, Argentina. ... Manchester United goalkeeper Tim Howard, an American, was named to the English Premier League's team of the year. Arsenal striker Thierry Henry was named player of the year. Chelsea midfielder Scott Parker was young player of the year.

WNBA: Houston guard Ukari Figgs retired and will be an assistant boys basketball coach in Georgetown, Ky. ... Phoenix forward Lisa Harrison retired. She and former Phoenix Suns forward Cedric Ceballos joined Mercury coach Carrie Graf's staff.
