SEMINOLE - After looking lackadaisical for the first three innings, Seminole's offensive arsenal woke up in a major way, scoring four runs in the fourth with Kyle Albright's three-run blast to left being the nail in Tarpon Springs' coffin.
The Warhawks would add an insurance run in the sixth, securing a 5-1 win at Brinker Field.
Shawn Keill began the fourth with a single up the left field line. After a passed ball and a sacrifice bunt, Ricky Nolan singled to center field scoring Keill. Two batters later, Albright's home run cleared the bases giving the Warhawks a 4-1 lead after four.
"I knew we were going to have a tough game on our hands with Matt Klimis pitching, but our offense has been swinging the bats all year long," said Seminole coach Scott Miller.
Starting pitcher Phil Weylie was masterful for the Warhawks, pitching a complete game four-hitter and exasperating the Spongers offense by recording 12 strikeouts. He also ran his season record to 8-1.
"I knew I had a tough task on my hand pitching against Tarpon Springs, but my defense behind me helped in every way," Weylie said.
Klimis went four innings for the Spongers, giving up four runs on four hits. He had a no-hitter through three, but he missed continuously on his curve ball in the fourth, surrendering all four runs in the inning.
The Spongers began the scoring in the second behind Justin Wilson's solo home run to right. The Spongers had a chance to add to their lead, but baserunning blunders burned them. Bobby Shank was picked off second base by Weylie and Bobby Heartman was caught snoozing at first base by the Warhawks catcher Nolan in the fourth. Mike Koulianos was also picked off first base in the sixth.
Wilson went 1-3 with a home run. Klimis went 1-3 with a double for the Spongers. Albright went 1-3 with a home run and three RBI. Nolan went 1-3 with a single and a RBI for Seminole.
