Because of inconsistent concentrations of kingfish, we have been taking the usual amount of frozen bottom-fishing bait and stopping at wrecks and artificial reefs to catch live bait. At times the kingfish have been at these places and provided good action. Several days have been disappointing though bait has been abundant.
Bottom fishing for grouper and snapper has been on target, with gag grouper, triggerfish and mangrove snapper active on ledges in 60-75 feet west to 90 feet. Flat limestone areas riddled with holes and crevices have produced great catches of red grouper. Live bait should be held in reserve until the bite slows when fishing for grouper. The "combo" package of a piece of squid and half a sardine has been effective.
The red grouper bottom holds vermillion snapper, also called beeliners in this area. They are among the best grouper bait available and are great table fare, rivaling red snapper for delicate taste. No.14 or 15 sabiki rigs with a 3- or 4-ounce sinker to prevent tangling should provide multiple hookups. Vermillion snapper must be 10 inches long. Dropping these large rigs has produced many species. They are great when children are aboard because of the varied activity they provide.
