Giants lose leadoff man to bad knee

SAN FRANCISCO - Giants second baseman Ray Durham went on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday with a left knee injury, and closer Robb Nen was transferred to the 60-day DL with a troublesome shoulder.

Durham, the team's leadoff hitter and one of its few productive regulars, strained his left patellar tendon in a 12-3 loss to the Braves on Tuesday night and is expected to miss 4-6 weeks. He was taken out after hitting into a double play in the seventh inning.

With crutches in hand, Durham left the ballpark on a motorized cart wearing a large brace and needed assistance getting into a car. Durham had an MRI exam on Wednesday that showed inflammation, but the knee wasn't as badly hurt as trainer Stan Conte thought.

"It didn't show as much damage as we feared," Conte said. "It's still tender. We have to decide how quickly we can move on this based on the MRI. The question on treatment is if we have to sit on this and let it heal."

Nen's move is retroactive to March 26. The three-time All-Star right-hander is trying to recover from three shoulder operations that caused him to miss last season. He hasn't thrown off a mound since last week.

He began the season on the disabled list because of rotator cuff tendinitis, but Conte now is calling the problem discomfort in the back of his shoulder.

SUSPENSIONS: Marlins shortstop Alex Gonzalez and Phillies catcher Todd Pratt drew three-game suspensions for a brawl last week. Gonzalez and Pratt appealed and will not serve the penalties until hearings are held.

Also, Cubs right-hander Kerry Wood was suspended for five games and manager Dusty Baker for one game for confronting umpires during a series against Cincinnati two weeks ago. Baker served his suspension during the game at Arizona. Wood hasn't decided whether to appeal.

ROSE MOVIE: Actor Tom Sizemore will play Pete Rose in the upcoming made-for-television movie Hustle. Directed by Peter Bogdanovich, Hustle will depict Rose's gambling-related downfall during the 1980s. Production is scheduled to begin in May for a Sept. 25 air date on ESPN.

ANGELS: Centerfielder Garret Anderson went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to April 22 with upper back stiffness.

BRAVES: Catcher-outfielder Eli Marrero went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to Sunday with an upper respiratory infection.

TIGERS: Catcher Ivan Rodriguez was scratched from the lineup with a finger injury. Manager Alan Trammell said he did not know how long Rodriguez would be out.

YANKEES: Centerfielder Bernie Williams was not in the starting lineup because of a strained left knee. He tweaked the knee Tuesday night while getting out of the way of a pitch but stayed in the game. He said he expected to play today.
