SEFFNER - In the first game of the Class 4A, District 11 semifinals, Newsome and Jefferson started late and played later. Nine innings were required for the Wolves to pull out a 2-1 victory.
In the second game, which didn't start until after 9 p.m. and ended at 10:45, Armwood defeated Freedom 7-5.
Emily Artis scored the winning run from third on an infield grounder that reached the Jefferson catcher in a photo finish. Artis made her first slide in high school softball getting a safe call and recording the winning run.
"Hey, it was a win," Newsome coach Melissa Sigmon said. "This team has come a long way this first season. In December, we had only four players and some of them had never played by the time we finally had a full team. But they are getting better and things are looking good for the future."
In the first inning, Armwood scored five runs on two hits, a walk and an error by Freedom.
However, the Patriots came back in the top of the second to tie the score with five runs on three hits, a pair of walks and two errors.
The Hawks went out front to stay in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI single by Lauren McKelvey. Armwood added an unearned insurance run in the bottom of the sixth to end the scoring and set up the final Friday with Newsome.
