Kids' club closer to finding a new home

The West Tampa Boys & Girls Club is in talks with the city about building a new facility at Riverfront Park.

The West Tampa Boys & Girls Club might be close to finding a new home.

The club is negotiating with city officials to build a new club at Riverfront Park, at W Laurel Street and N Boulevard.

The park would be an attractive site because it has football and soccer fields, a pool and is close to the North Boulevard Homes, where many of the club's children live, said club president Roy Opfer. The park is also convenient to Blake High School, Tampa Preparatory School and the University of Tampa, whose students could perform community service hours at the club.

The Riverfront Park is the latest in a line of possible locations for the club. The club must move from its site on N MacDill Avenue by mid January because of the widening of Interstate 275. The club planned to relocate to nearby MacFarlane Park, in two different spots, but community opposition stopped it.

Opfer said negotiations have just begun and could take a couple of weeks.
