Land O'Lakes: Ocala company to help fill need for assisted living

LAND O'LAKES - Land O'Lakes is getting something in short supply in this hotbed of young suburban families: an assisted living facility for the elderly.

A company from Ocala, Hampton Manor, plans to open a 17,609-square-foot, two-story home at the entrance to the Indian Lakes neighborhood.

The 2-acre commercial site sits on the southwest corner of State Road 54 and Canoe Drive, between Livingston Road and Foggy Ridge Parkway.

Hampton Manor runs three assisted living facilities, in the communities of Ocala, Dunnellon and Belleview, in Citrus and Marion counties.

Assisted living is meant for people too frail to live alone but who don't need 24-hour nursing care. Residents tend to be widowed women in their 80s.

Further details about Hampton Manor's plans for Land O'Lakes were unavailable, but the company's other locations hold between 42 and 61 beds. County officials are reviewing the project's construction plans.

The only similar operation in Land O'Lakes' is the Baldomero Lopez State Veterans' Nursing Home. Residency there is limited to military veterans.
