PCAC championship

WHAT: Pinellas County Athletic Conference baseball championship.

WHO: Seminole vs. St. Petersburg.

WHEN/WHERE: Tonight, 7:30 at Progress Energy Park.

OUTLOOK: The South Division champ Green Devils and North Division champ Warhawks meet for the third time this season after splitting their first two games. They could meet again in next week's district tournament, where Seminole is the No.1 seed and St. Petersburg is No.2.

The Green Devils are the hosts, and since they don't have lights at their home field, they had to find another site. Coach Stefan Futch managed to secure the Devil Rays' spring training home, giving tonight's game a big-time feel.

This is St. Petersburg's third game this week, so they won't be starting ace Aaron Tullo or No. 2 Dale Brannon, but lefty reliever Courtland Chambers, who is 1-0 with a 2.45 ERA and one save. Chambers has started a few games this year, but Futch said he will probably "bullpen" it tonight, meaning lots of pitchers.

St. Petersburg lost its last PCAC title game appearance, falling 13-2 to Dunedin in 2001.

The Warhawks won the PCAC title from 1992-95, and in 2000, but haven't won it under current coach Scott Miller. But Miller did win the 2001 mythical national championship. The Warhawks had to forfeit games that year for using an ineligible player and did not win the North Division, or they could have faced the Green Devils.

Seminole will start Adam Chappie.
