CARROLLWOOD - Kids with empty piggy banks can use creativity to win Mom a valuable bauble for Mother's Day.
Avant Gold Jewelers is holding an essay contest for children ages 12 and younger. The winner will receive an 18-karat gold and pink sapphire sweetheart pendant and chain, by designer Charles Krypell. The necklace is valued at $800. "It's a valuable piece," said Stephanie Haas, Avant marketing director. "Not something that a child would be able to afford."
Contestants should write 100 words or less, explaining why their mother deserves to win the necklace. Preschool-age children can draw a picture.
Entries are judged on creativity and sentiment by Avant staff members. Haas said last year's winning entry was a poem in the shape of a sun.
"It's got to be from the heart," Haas said. "We can tell when they've had help from Mom."
Entries should include the child's name and age and the mother's name and telephone number, including area code. Entries must be received by mail or brought to the store by Friday. The winner will be notified on Saturday.
Avant Gold Jewelers is at 10330 N Dale Mabry Highway in The Promenade. Call 961-0097.
