Flames eliminate Red Wings

CALGARY, Alberta - Calgary's Martin Gelinas scored on a rebound 19:13 into overtime to defeat Detroit 1-0 and send the Flames to the Western Conference final.

The sixth-seeded Flames stunned the Red Wings, winning the second-round series 4-2.

Calgary goaltender Miikka Kiprusoff made 38 saves and Detroit's Curtis Joseph had 43.

Gelinas converted on a shot off of Joseph's skate. Jarome Iginla started the play with a shot from the left; Joseph saved it and Craig Conroy's rebound shot, but the puck bounced to an open Gelinas on the right side of the crease.

Detroit's ouster also gives the Lightning home-ice advantage the rest of the playoffs. The Wings won the Presidents' Trophy for the best regular-season record and, with 109 points, were the only team with more than Tampa Bay (106).

Leafs ready to go

TORONTO - Bryan McCabe is ready to move on. The rest of the Maple Leafs better be, too.

"Today's a new day," McCabe said. "The best part about playoffs is you get another opportunity to redeem yourself."

The defenseman and his teammates have plenty of redeeming to do when they host tonight's Game6 against the Flyers. The Flyers lead the best-of-seven series 3-2 and stand one win from meeting the Lightning in the Eastern Conference final.

Philadelphia took control of the second-round series with a 7-2 home victory Sunday.

Flyers goalie Robert Esche probably will return after leaving Game5 with flulike symptoms.

AVALANCHE: Forward Paul Kariya (sprained right ankle) practiced for the first time in nearly a month and could play in tonight's Game6 against San Jose.

CANUCKS: Brian Burke is out as president and general manager two weeks after Vancouver was ousted in the first round. Burke's contract expires June 30 - his 49th birthday - and the team said the deal won't be extended.

DANTON CHARGES: Blues forward Mike Danton returned to the St. Louis area from California to face charges in an alleged murder-for-hire plot, a federal marshal said. Danton was held in a jail near St. Louis and will be arraigned today in federal court, U.S. Attorney Ronald Tenpas' office said.

WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS: The United States clinched a spot in the quarterfinals, and in the 2006 Olympics, as Finland beat Russia 4-0 in Ostrava, Czech Republic. The Americans will be ranked among the world's top eight, which means automatic qualification for the Turin Games, when the championships end. Also, Josef Beranek scored twice, leading the host Czechs to a 6-2 victory over defending champion Canada in Prague, clinching Group E.
