Just call them double trouble and twice the fun.

After only 11/2 years of pole vaulting, senior Amy Cortese cleared 8 feet, 6 inches at the Class A state track meet for a sixth-place finish on Thursday.

Eighth-grader Rachel Capra, who has been playing softball and competing in track, took fourth in the high jump.

"I don't think either of them really expected to do that well," Seven Rivers athletic director and track coach Jamie Richard said. "I was really please with their effort. It was a great way for Amy to end her career."

HOME PLATE: The Warriors completed their baseball season, besting last year's record with five more wins and a 6-10 finish.

One of the highlights was beating Cedar Key for the first time in school history with a 5-8 win for a 2-2 mark at the beginning of the season.

"We learned not to give up," coach Steve Ecklie said about the fourth-year program. "We learned how to battle.

"All year I tried to teach them to give it everything you've got and if you make a mistake to shrug it off," he said. "They have set a great foundation for next year."

Even with a broken arm, Chad Peets threw 89 pitches and 72 strikes against Montverde and played the last 21/2 games with a cast on.

Peets had two sacrifice bunts and a base hit to close out the season and led Seven Rivers with a .455 batting average and 11 RBIs. HONORS: Seven Rivers coaches gave out their Most Improved Player Award, Coach's Award and Most Improved to their winter and spring athletes last night.

The Most Improved Award goes to a player who, through work ethic and discipline, showed the greatest improvement during the season.

The Coach's Award is given to the player who provides the greatest level of leadership and example to his or her teammates.
