Waffles for Mom

Yes, you can slave over homemade waffles for Mother's Day, or you can dress up frozen versions. Whipped cream, creme fraiche, liqueurs, fresh berries, and even chopped Oreos scattered on vanilla ice cream make a yummy start for the day. And if you really love her, you'll clean up the kitchen. Nine suggestions to get the party started:

Toasted pecans and butter whipped with honey

Fresh blueberries, creme fraiche (or sour cream) and lemon zest

Bananas soaked in rum with vanilla pudding or custard mixed with maraschino cherries

Crumbled crispy bacon and maple syrup

Strawberries soaked in Cointreau with whipped cream

Chocolate whipped cream, chocolate chips, raspberries

PB&J - mascarpone mixed with chopped peanuts and strawberry syrup

Chocolate sauce, vanilla ice cream and chopped Oreos

Chopped macadamia nuts and Coco Lopez mixed with key lime yogurt; lime zest garnish

constant comment

"It (The Restaurant) just does a disservice because as an industry - and Rocco knows this, because he's a professional - this is not how we operate serious restaurants." - Restaurateur Lidia Bastianich in the New York Times on chef Rocco Disipirto's reality TV show.

books for mom

Who makes the best mac and cheese in the world? If you ask chef and author Anthony Bourdain (Kitchen Confidential, Ecco, $14), he'll tell you his mom does. Hers and other recipes from mothers of renowned chefs are compiled in Mom's Secret Recipe File (Hyperion, $17.95), edited by Chris Styler. Other chefs who have contributed recipes include Jamie Oliver, Nigella Lawson, Sara Moulton, Sylvia Woods, Jacques Pepin and Joan Nathan. A portion of the proceeds is being donated to the Women's Commission for Refugee Women and Children, a nonprofit affiliate of the International Rescue Committee.

Recipes for Our Daughters (Ballantine Books, $19.95), by Naomi Neft and Cynthia Rothstein, is a collection of "Family Favorites and Recipes From Outstanding Women." After their own daughters asked for family recipes, the authors collected them but also tapped a group of notable women for favorite dishes and tips. The result is about 200 recipes that range from singer Joan Baez's baked squash to U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Dole's pecan roll cookies, to skater Peggy Fleming's salmon in parchment paper.

We thought we'd giggled all we could about Janet Jackson's "wardrobe malfunction" during the Super Bowl halftime show. Then we stumbled on Adam Roberts' food blog. The third-year Emory University law student thought Jackson's exposed breast looked almost edible, so he fashioned a cupcake after it, complete with starburst jewelry made of white icing. He also sells a T-shirt with the confection strategically located and the message "Nice cupcake, Janet" splashed across the front. It's $19.99 plus shipping. There is no link to the cupcake feature from the home page but if you do a www.google.com search for "Janet Jackson cupcake," you'll get it and yet another shot of the original incident. Shouldn't this kid be studying for finals or something?

berry, berry good

They aren't cheap, but your mother will know she's appreciated if she gets a box of Shari's Berries chocolate-covered strawberries in the mail this week. The Northern California company uses the largest, most flavorful strawberries you'll ever come across. The ones we sampled last week were so delicious that we're recommending them to you. A half-dozen is $32.95 plus overnight shipping, which is about $18 to Florida. Sugar-free varieties available. Call toll-free 1-888-774-7797 or order online at www.berries.com
