EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - The Giants are thinking about signing quarterback Kurt Warner if the two-time NFL MVP is released by the Rams in asalary-cap move.
"We've been talking," Mark Bartelstein, Warner's agent, said in a telephone interview Thursday.
Giants spokesman Pat Hanlon had no comment.
Bartelstein has spoken with six or seven teams about signing Warner since the Rams gave him permission to shop for a deal for the quarterback who led St. Louis to a Super Bowl championship in the 1999 season.
Warner's future in St. Louis became uncertain this week when Marc Bulger signed a four-year deal. It's unlikely Warner will take a pay cut to stay, and it's more unlikely he will enjoy being Bulger's backup again.
Going to the Giants, however, would pose questions.
New York seemingly wants to start Eli Manning, the top pick in last month's draft. The team cut Kerry Collins last week, taking $8.95-million off its salary cap. "We haven't said we're going to New York," Bartelstein said. "I don't think they have decided on what is the best way to develop Manning."
Bartelstein said Warner would be willing to sign a one-year contract, acknowledging this is not an easy time for veterans to get multiyear deals.
Warner lost his starting job to Bulger after fumbling six times in a season-opening loss to the Giants.
BEARS: Fullback Stanley Pritchett was released. The eight-year veteran played three seasons with Chicago and started 10 games in 2003.
PACKERS: Defensive back Bryant Westbrook, a former first-round pick who missed last season because of a ruptured right Achilles' tendon, was released.
SAINTS: Safety Jay Bellamy was arrested last month and charged with drunken driving. He was arrested April 27. Questions about Bellamy's arraignment were referred to New Orlean's attorney, who was not available for comment.
TEXANS: Safety Marcus Coleman was charged with driving while intoxicated after his damaged car was found on a curb in Houston. He was booked into the city jail and was freed on $500 bond.
EX-SEAHAWK MOST WANTED: Former Seattle running back Chris Warren is on Washington state's "most wanted" list of deadbeat parents. He owes $103,147 in child support to the mother of his two children, according to the state Division of Child Support. "I'm not looking to slam Chris," said Monique Mulloy, the mother of Warren's children. "But I'm at my wits' end." Warren is supposed to pay $5,000 a month to support his two daughters, 10 and 11. Warren isn't the only former pro athlete on the list. The state says former Florida basketball player Vernon Maxwell, who played for the Sonics in 1999, owes $34,000 to the mother of his 2-year-old. Maxwell was arrested last month for failing to pay $160,000 for his teenage son in Florida.
