Lightning vs. Flyers Match-Up

By DAMIAN CRISTODERO
Published May 8, 2004

THE BREAKDOWN: Everything is different. Then again, it is the same. The series is expected to be much more physical than the previous one, although Montreal tried some rough stuff in Games 3 and 4. So expect grinding intensity and just as much excitement because that kind of game builds hate. And hate is the fuel for a thrilling series. Can Philadelphia go to the body as consistently as against Toronto? After six tough games, it might be difficult. If not, look for Tampa Bay's speed to become an even greater edge.

If the Flyers are charged up, that speed will be even more important to stay out of Philadelphia's way and create with the forecheck. And when Tampa Bay is hit, Lightning associate coach Craig Ramsay said it is imperative the players "not care" and continue to make plays, whether that means hitting back or turning one's back to keep control of the puck. Tampa Bay also must not get sucked into retaliation penalties. The Flyers have the No. 2 power play in the playoffs at 20 percent.

Philadelphia also will try to create traffic in front of Nikolai Khabibulin. So it is up to Tampa Bay to clog the middle of the ice and block shots. On the other end, Tampa Bay's speed and passing must get the Flyers defense off stride and goalie Robert Esche going side to side. The view here is Tampa Bay's speed and skill will be too much to handle. And Khabibulin stays hot.

DAMIAN CRISTODERO'S PREDICTION: Lightning in 7.
