CHICAGO - A 26-year-old man was shot dead in the street near Wrigley Field after watching the Cubs play Thursday, ESPN.com reported.

Frank Hernandez was shot about 90 minutes after the Cubs beat the Diamondbacks 11-3.

Authorities said Hernandez was cut off by two men in an SUV as he was crossing an intersection near Wrigley about 6 p.m. Police said Hernandez hit the SUV with a miniature baseball bat and then broke the souvenir over the driver's head when the driver got out of the vehicle.

The SUV's passenger got out and shot Hernandez in the upper abdomen, police said. Paramedics performed CPR, but Hernandez was pronounced dead at Illinois Masonic Medical Center.

Chicago Police Sgt. Robert Cargie said two men remain in custody in connection with the shooting, but no charges had been filed.

BRAVES: Chipper Jones said he was ready to come off the DL, but the team decided to give the leftfielder's right hamstring another day of rest.

D'BACKS: First baseman Richie Sexson, out with a bone bruise and slightly torn cartilage in his left shoulder, insisted he will be in the lineup when he's eligible to come off the disabled list Friday, far ahead of the schedule team doctors forecast.

DODGERS: Catcher Todd Hundley, out all season with a back problem, plans to have surgery Tuesday to repair torn cartilage in his right hip. ... Outfielder Dave Roberts went on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right hamstring.

INDIANS: Right-handed reliever Jose Jimenez was activated from the 15-day disabled list after missing nearly a month with a strained left side.

MARLINS: Right-hander Jeff Allison, the team's first-round pick in June who left minor-league camp in Jupiter without permission last weekend, was treated over the winter for dependency on the prescription painkiller OxyContin, according to baseballamerica.com.

METS: Third baseman Ty Wigginton returned after two weeks on the DL because of an ulcer.

RANGERS: Ameriquest Mortgage Co. bought naming rights to the team's ballpark for 30 years, the lender's second major sponsorship in major-league baseball. The stadium, known as the Ballpark in Arlington since it opened in 1994, will be renamed Ameriquest Field in Arlington.

ROYALS: AL rookie of the year and shortstop Angel Berroa agreed to an $11-million, four-year extension.

WHITE SOX: Shortstop Jose Valentin, out with a strained left hamstring, returned from a rehabilitation assignment at Triple-A Charlotte.
