Wireless insecurity

TomsHardware.com/column/20040430/

It's pretty hard to buy a laptop that doesn't offer some kind of wireless connection option. And why would you want one without it anyway? Perhaps you might be up in a small plane and itching to check your e-mail. If you were flying over Los Angeles, there would be a 70 percent chance you could hitch a ride on somebody else's Internet connection. Apart from the cool nerd factor of this article, the point the authors are trying to make is that it takes only a few minutes to read the manual and lock down your wireless access point. Do you know who's using yours right now?

EU Q&A

news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/2266385.stm

Unless you've been in a box, you might have noted the European Union gained a few new members recently. You might not be able to name them off the top of your head, but you can do yourself a favor by reading up on what it means. This link offers a nice Q&A. And if it tickles your fancy, be sure to click on the Guide to new members.

Free (rebate pending)

www.FreeAfterRebate.info/

The only thing better than free is getting money back after your purchase. And unless you're buying new cell phones and plans from the likes of Amazon, you don't see a lot of that. So, if you're a fan of zero cost, this site's a good one to add to your cheapskate arsenal. I've been stung by rebates that never materialized, so don't spend the rent money on new tech toys if you know what's good for you.

Abandoned, not forgotten

www.Airfields-Freeman.com/

I was surprised to learn that bits of Weedon Island used to be an airport when I stumbled on this fine site that catalogs abandoned airports. The section that details Weedon is the Tampa Southern Area, and it's well done. Lots of aerial photos and informative text make for an interesting experience. Click around the other links because most are equally informative.

Tax consumption

FairTaxVolunteer.org/smart/sketch.html

The idea that we should be taxed at a flat rate refuses to die or move forward. In theory, I'm sure we'd all like such a system but in reality it's highly unlikely it would ever happen. In a nutshell, this site proposes a 23 percent flat tax rate on all goods and 0 percent tax on your paycheck. Adorable, isn't it?
