If you haven't dusted off your tarpon gear, it's time you did. Tarpon are showing at most of their early season hangouts in good numbers.
It's good to change line on dormant tarpon reels. Line memory, twist and forgotten abrasions can and will lead to lost fish. Even with unused braided line, salt will dry out the line during long periods of inactivity and could cause weakness. Also, have the line put on your reels by trusted professionals with professional lining equipment. The line will be put on tighter and straighter than by hand; remember, it is the only thing between you and the fish. And, while at your favorite tackle shop, spend a couple more bucks and have them service the reels as well. They'll see worn parts that the layman wouldn't.
Rod guides, especially ceramic guides, should be checked for cracks and imperfections. Guides are relatively cheap to replace compared with the cost of a new rod.
Recently during the full moon, anglers fishing at night were rewarded with multiple hookups. Bay bridges (Gandy, Frankland and Skyway) were the hot spots and the action should continue there. Though the bite might slow at night coming away from the full moon, look for the early sunrise bite to pick up. With the moon and sun up at the same time, anglers can expect good fishing until the moon sets.
