EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - Two-time MVP Kurt Warner met with the Giants on Tuesday to discuss becoming the veteran quarterback who competes with Eli Manning for the starting job.
"He had a great meeting," said Mark Bartelstein, Warner's agent, in a telephone interview. "It was very positive. He was impressed with everything."
Warner took a physical but didn't throw, New York general manager Ernie Accorsi said. While the Rams are letting Warner talk to other teams, he isn't allowed to throw for them.
Warner lost his starting job last season. St. Louis gave him permission to shop himself, with the expectation he would be released in a salary-cap move June 1.
Marc Bulger, who took over as the Rams starter after the first game last season, recently was given a long-term contract.
BENGALS: Running back Rudi Johnson signed a one-year contract. Johnson was a restricted free agent, but Cincinnati made sure he would stay by tendering a one-year, $1.8-million offer. No team was willing to match it and give the Bengals first- and third-round draft picks as compensation.
BRONCOS: Linebacker Johnny Rutledge re-signed. The former Florida player signed with Denver last year and played special teams.
49ERS: Quarterback Tim Rattay had surgery on his left groin. Rattay tore a tendon in his groin during the first practice at minicamp Friday. The team expects him to return for training camp in late July, but it acknowledges the injury could keep Rattay out longer.
PATRIOTS: Free agent offensive lineman Bob Hallen signed. Hallen, who spent the past two seasons with the Chargers, is entering his seventh season.
