Bowman Heights great without an association

Published May 14, 2004

Here in Bowman Heights we are white, black, Hispanic and Asian. We are young couples, families raising children, baby boomers and retirees. We are musicians, teachers, city inspectors, lawyers, independent contractors, nurses, homemakers and caregivers. Literally a model of diversity.

Those who believe Bowman Heights residents fear change are themselves in fear of the diversity of our neighborhood, where homeowners have always been independent thinkers, without need for a self-appointed spokesperson.

Forming an association, additional lights, chains and excess signage along our riverfront would all detract greatly from the simple, peaceful neighborhood that initially attracted us all.

Bowman Heights: a good place to live and let live.

Reader fondly remembers keeping chickens as pets

Thank you for your article, "Cluck if you must; chickens are loved" (April 30).

I grew up with companion chickens in addition to companion dogs and cats. I enjoyed reading about others who treat the birds with love and respect.

For anyone considering having chickens as companions, please adopt them from a rescue group instead of buying them from hatcheries. Many are already in need of homes. See www.farmsanctuary.org Click on adoptions. Also see www.upc-online.org for great information.
