The NBA's past two rookies of the year were joined by Knicks guard Stephon Marbury, Nets forward Richard Jefferson and Suns forward Shawn Marion.
"It's a dream come true for me to represent my country," said James, 19, the youngest U.S. Olympic men's basketball player since Spencer Haywood in 1968.
Ray Allen (family matter) and Kobe Bryant (facing trial in Colorado) withdrew from the team.
VOLLEYBALL: The Japan women's team won a spot in the Olympics by beating South Korea 25-19, 25-19, 25-15 in qualifying.
TENNIS: Capriati vs. Serena
Top-seeded Serena Williams and No. 5 Jennifer Capriati advanced to the semifinals of the Italian Open. Williams beat Svetlana Kuznetsova 7-5, 6-0, her third straight win in her first tournament after missing a month with a knee injury. Capriati, who has lost fewer games than any of the other semifinalists, beat Anna Smashnova-Pistolesi 6-3, 6-3. Amelie Mauresmo reached the semifinals for the fifth time in six years with a 6-1, 2-6, 7-5 win over Silvia Farina Elia, who was trying to become the first female Italian semifinalist in Rome since the open era began in 1969. Mauresmo faces Vera Zvonareva.
HAMBURG MASTERS: Top-ranked Roger Federer beat Carlos Moya 6-4, 6-3, defeating one of the best clay-court players to reach the semifinals in Germany. Federer faces Lleyton Hewitt, who beat Juergen Melzer 6-4, 6-3. Guillermo Coria faces Ivan Ljubicic in the other semifinal.

CYCLING: Italian police arrested four people for allegedly selling drugs to Tour de France winner Marco Pantani, who died in February from cocaine poisoning. Police in Rimini said three men and a woman were arrested on suspicion of having sold Pantani the fatal dose. ... Italy's Alessandro Petacchi won the sixth stage of the Giro d'Italia. Gilberto Simoni is the overall leader by 13 seconds.
HORSES: Former Travers Stakes and Illinois Derby winner Ten Most Wantedhas been retired because of a leg injury.
TRACK: Sprinters LaTasha Colander-Richardson and Shaun Crawford led 1-2 U.S. finishes in their events in the IAAF Super Grand Prix in Doha, Qatar. Colander-Richardson won the women's 200 meters in 22.50 seconds. Crawford led an American medal sweep in the men's 100 with a 9.86.
SENTENCING: Two men who threw white paint on a landmark Detroit sculpture of boxer Joe Louis' fist were sentenced to 30 days in jail. Brett Cashman, 45, and John T. Price, 27, were also ordered to serve 18 months on probation and pay $1,000 each.
OBITUARY: Jesus Gil y Gil, the former Atletico de Madrid owner who changed soccer coaches at a rapid rate, died at 71. On Sunday he had a severe stroke at his home south of Madrid.
