Area swimmers meet with success

St. Pete Aquatics recently competed in the Hurricane Man and Pass-a-Grille Open Water Swim. Brenna Varando and Heather Skaggs set new meet records in the 1000-meter swim at St. Pete Beach. Verando finished in 13:32:00 and Skaggs in 14:16:00.

In the 10-and-under girls division, Marissa Marckese was first (21:50) and Melanie Rorer second (21:51). Kaitling Frehling finished second in the 11-12 girls division in 16:50.

In the 11-12 boys, Stuart Weber was first in 17:12:00, while Tracy Rorer, 13-14 girls, set a meet record in 14:20:00. Other finishers included Charles Bardin (first, 13-14 boys), Sally Deacker (15-16 girls), Titilayo Adeleye (second, 15-16 girls) and Russell Snyder (first, 15-16 boys).

In the Hurricane 2.4-mile swim, Stase Michota was first in the girls 13-14 division, finishing in 51:00:00. Cameron Chambers (first, 13-14 boys, 49:16:00) and Mitchell Snyder (first, 17-and-over boys, 47:00:00) completed the day for SPA. The team had many competitors finish in the top 5, including Megan Romano, who won the 50-meter freestyle, 100 backstroke, 200 free and 100 individual medley. Rorer won the 100-meter breaststroke and 200 breaststroke, along with the 200 individual medley.

In the senior girls division, Daniela Brands was first in the 200-meter individual medley and was part of the winning 200 medley relay team (with Romano, Rorer and Kelsey Krauss). For the boys, Varando won the 100 and 200 breaststroke and was second in the 200 and 400 individual medley. He was a member of the first-place 200-meter relay team, joining Adam Moody, Andy Stoddard and Mitchell Snyder.

In the 11-12 girls division, Frehling finished second in the 50 freestyle and fifth in the 100 freestyle and 100 fly. She was on the first-place 200 freestyle relay team with Allie Evans, Colleen Quinn and Jennifer Crankshaw. In the senior girls, the 200 freestyle relay team of Romano, Brands, Victoria King and Krauss came in second. King was fifth in the 50 freestyle and Jaime Milo finished second in the 100 breaststroke and fifth in the 200 breaststroke.

BASEBALL: The 13-and-under Gulf Beach Hammerheads, a local AAU team, finished second in Division II at the AAU national qualifier recently in Winter Haven. The team earned a berth in the national tournament, which is being held in Myrtle Beach, S.C., in July. The finish at the qualifier continued a string of strong tournament play. In their past three tournaments, the Hammerheads have finished second twice and third once.

SOCCER CLINICS: The Oldsmar Soccer Club will hold youth clinics at Canal Park in Oldsmar next weekend. Players will have an opportunity to learn fundamentals and more advanced skills through teaching from coaches affiliated with a top professional team from the English Premier League.

There are two clinics. A one-day clinic, held either Friday for ages 11-14 or May 22 for ages 8-10, is $15 and includes a T-shirt. Bothclinics are two hours. The three-day clinics, which will be held May 25 for ages 8-12 and 13-18, are $75 and include a T-shirt. These clinics are three hours.
