SAN DIEGO - Sammy Sosa hit his 549th home run Saturday night to pass Mike Schmidt and take sole possession of ninth place on the career list, leading the Cubs to a 7-5 win over the Padres.
The two-run shot off Adam Eaton with two outs in the fifth inning was estimated at 434 feet, the longest homer in 21 games at Petco Park. Aramis Ramirez added a three-run shot in the fifth, the 100th of his career. Moises Alou had a solo homer among his four hits, and scored three times. He finished 4-for-5.
The power barrage made a winner of Sergio Mitre (2-2), who grew up in the San Diego area and played at a junior college just up the street from Petco.
Next up on the career list for Sosa is Reggie Jackson with 563.
Ramirez's shot, his ninth, gave the Cubs a five-run lead. Alou also homered to left on an 0-and-2 pitch with two outs in the third, his ninth.
Mitre lasted six innings, allowing three runs and six hits, striking out three and walking three. He gave up Ramon Hernandez's homer in the sixth, his third, and Brian Giles' two-run single in the third.

The Padres closed the gap on a run-scoring single by Ryan Klesko in the seventh and a run-scoring double by Sean Burroughs in the eighth.
CARDINALS 4, MARLINS 0: Chris Carpenter kept host St. Louis' unsung rotation humming.
Carpenter (4-1) allowed four hits in 71/3 innings and controlled the Marlins with a sinking fastball that resulted in only one fly-ball out, continuing his comeback after missing all of last season after shoulder surgery. He struck out five, walked two and benefited from three double plays.
Albert Pujols, Jim Edmonds and Edgar Renteria drove in a run apiece in the fourth inning against Darren Oliver, and catcher Mike Matheny had two hits and an RBI as the Cardinals (20-17) moved three games above .500 for the first time this season.
BRAVES 11, BREWERS 6: Johnny Estrada had a career-high five hits and five RBIs to lead visiting Atlanta, but the win was overshadowed by an injury to Marcus Giles.

Adam LaRoche had four doubles - tying a major-league record - and Estrada and Jones homered for the Braves, who improved to 17-18 with their second straight win over the Brewers.
