Dom Irrera stops in Tampa frequently, but he says those who have seen him before shouldn't come expecting familiar bits.
"I don't use a lot of the (familiar) stuff," Irrera told the Columbus Post-Dispatch recently. "I don't want people to think I'm not writing stuff. If you do all your old stuff, people ask: "Are you the Beach Boys?'
"I want them to think they're seeing a live show, not seeing some comedyrobot," he said.
Irrera has been on the comedy circuit for 20 years. His first break came in 1988, when Rodney Dangerfield chose him for a spot on the special Nothing Goes Right. Since then, he's had several cable specials and guest appearances on popular sitcoms (Seinfeld, Everybody Loves Raymond, King of Queens). He opened for Cher during her long farewell tour, and he is the voice of a character on the Nickelodeon animated series Hey, Arnold.
Irrera performs Friday through Sunday at Side Splitters Comedy Club, Cascades Plaza, 12938 N Dale Mabry Highway, Tampa. Shows are at 8 and 10:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, 8:30 p.m. Sunday. Tickets are $14-$16. RSVP: (813) 960-1197.
