Miracle

DIRECTOR: Gavin O'Connor

CAST: Kurt Russell, Patricia Clarkson, Noah Emmerich, Eddie Cahill, Patrick O'Brien Demsey, Michael Mantenuto, Eric Peter-Kaiser, Kenneth Mitchell

SYNOPSIS: The story of how coach Herb Brooks (Russell) transformed the 1980 U.S. Olympic hockey team from a dissenting bunch of me-first players into a team that symbolized the best of U.S. pride and determination.

WHAT WE SAID: "O'Connor stages impressive hockey sequences, especially the stunning Olympic victory over a seemingly invincible Russian team," St. Petersburg Times film critic Steve Persall wrote. He gave the movie a B- because "the historical drama never catches fire in Miracle, as it did in Seabiscuit. At times, this film could change uniforms and simply be a serious version of The Mighty Ducks."

MPAA RATING: PG; sports violence, mild profanity.

RUNNING TIME: 135 min.

Paycheck

DIRECTOR: John Woo

CAST: Ben Affleck, Aaron Eckhart, Uma Thurman, Paul Giamatti, Colm Feore, Joe Morton, Michael C. Hall

SYNOPSIS: Affleck stars as a man whose previous two years of memory have been erased in this action flick based on a story by science fiction author Philip K. Dick.

WHAT WE SAID: "Woo . . . has pretensions to something as thoughtful and provocative as the source material, which was more concerned with philosophical questions - man's moral responsibilities, etc. - than with sleek high-tech surfaces," wrote reviewer Philip Booth, giving the film a B-. "But the director ultimately reverts to form, wrapping a brisk, smartly executed chase film in sci-fi clothing."

MPAA RATING: PG-13; violence, profanity.

RUNNING TIME: 119 min.

WHAT WE SAID: The Times did not review this film.

MPAA RATING: PG-13; violence, sexuality, language and drug references.

RUNNING TIME: 81 min.
