Tampa has won a $10,000 grant to be used for history education and preservation efforts from the national Save Our History campaign led by the History Channel and the White House's Preserve America.

Chosen from 10 cities, the Bank of America Community Award recognizes Tampa as the best at integrating the efforts of local government officials, agencies, school districts and preservation organizations.

Representatives from the History Channel, Bank of America, the city of Tampa, Tampa Preservation Inc. and the Hillsborough County School District visited Lee Elementary School last month to see what students had learned about their nearly 100-year-old school.

Save Our History pulled in about 5,500 students from across the country to work on preservation projects this spring. Three $10,000 grants and 15 $1,000 grants were awarded.
