Woman charged with attempted murder

A Spring Hill woman was arrested Friday and charged with the attempted murder of the father of her child by putting prescription medication in his coffee and chicken dinner.

According to an arrest report, Joye Conners, 29, of 7354 Myhope Road was involved with another man and feared that if she were to leave Edward Kubica, 44, he would seek custody of their child. So, authorities said, on Wednesday she ground up a cocktail of sedative pharmaceuticals and put the powder in a baked chicken she made for Kubica to cause his death.

Kubica noticed the food tasted bitter and ate only a small portion, the report said. He later found that Conners had accidentally recorded herself on the home answering machine detailing the plan to her lover, a man named Anthony, authorities said. Kubica then contacted police. "The flame had flickered out of her romance," said Lt. Joe Paez, a spokesman for the Hernando County Sheriff's Office. "It is a bizarre event. Almost like soap opera material." Conners was being held without bail Saturday at the Hernando County Jail.
