The drive between Erbil and Duhok is filled with empty rolling hills where more sheep are seen than people. But as in much of the countryside, a walk could be deadly. Land mines remain embedded in the ground from years of fighting during the Iran-Iraq war and several years of Kurdish resistance as well.
